There is an Urban Legend that says we only use 10 percent of our brain.
There are times, (heavy sigh), that we can look around in our society and almost see visible proof of this.
Everything from Politicians who lie to the public (as though the lies weren’t as plain as day), to “Dumbest Criminals” video footage.
In fact, in some cases, you’re tempted to say that 10 percent might even be a little generous.
But the truth of this myth…
…is there is no truth to it.
So where does this myth come from? Internet searches are inconclusive.
Web site documentation of this narrows it down to “possibly” a misquote by Albert Einstein, or “maybe” a misunderstanding of the work of Pierre Flourens (c. 1800’s), or “perhaps” the naïve - but optimistic - quote from William James (1908) who said, “We are making use of only a small part of our possible mental and physical resources”.
[Information source: http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/tenper.htmlSnopes.com traced media sources that have published the myth, including a careful examination of the show “Eye to Eye with Bryant Gumble”, aired in July 1998. Snopes observed that the episode perpetuated the myth, except for what’s called a “bumper spot” between commercials, when the show presented a multiple choice quiz, and gave the correct answer: we use 100% of our brains.
[Information source:
http://www.snopes.com/science/stats/10percent.aspThose are just two web sites.
Snopes also beautifully points out that in the Hospital Emergency Room, the Doctor never says to the family, “Luckily, that bullet entered his skull in the 90% of his brain that nobody uses, so he’ll be fine.”
Many web sites refer to Brain Scan Imaging technology that proves scientifically, and irrefutably, that 100% of the Brain is used at various times, depending on the task, or circumstance. From automatic reflexes, to the Autonomic Nervous System (things you don’t think about, such as breathing, heart rate, etc.), to deductive reasoning, to emotional responses.
Studies of the Brain have revealed the fascinating mechanism of how the brain actually functions.
There are two schools of “thought” about how the brain works.
One side of the debate is that the brain operates digitally - the other school declares that the brain operates with an “analogue” system.
It’s tempting to call this a “left-brain/right-brain” debate.
We’re familiar with the term digital. Our lives are affected by everything from digital camera’s to the “one’s” and “zero’s” on a CD disk.
Analogue, however, is a little less familiar. Both of these are best described on a web site called Daily Camera, as digital being like a light switch either strictly “on” or “off”, with no variable in between.
Analogue, on the other hand, being like a dimmer switch on a light, capable of almost infinite discreet settings in between the extremes of “on” or “off”.

A wooden ruler is an analogue instrument.
The brain utilizes both digital and analogue mechanisms built into the Nervous System to process information.
[For an in-depth overview of this, consult Neuroscience For Kids, located here:
http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/tenper.htmlWhen I read this about the brain, it made complete sense to me, because God is a creative genius that way.
Consider this excerpt from Brain-Mind.com: [emphasis in italics is mine]
“Neurons receive input from other cells largely through synaptic contacts on their dendrites and cell bodies. The release of neurotransmitters at these synapses causes the voltage inside the cell receiving the transmitters to fluctuate continuously. Once this voltage passes a threshold, an action potential is generated. The action potential is a specialized waveform known to be able to travel down the axon, or output portion of the cell.”

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. “
The phrase “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” needs some explanation.
At first glance, that verse seems at odds with science.
But if we remain calm, and look at the verse closely, the term “Double minded” is the Greek word “dipsuchos”, meaning “two-spirited” or “vacillating” (from Strong’s Concordance). A good word to describe this is the word “oscillating”.
A persons choices “oscillate” between two opinions.
The phrase “double-minded” does not refer to mechanisms, but rather to reasoned choices. (Or to put it more exactly: desired choices)
The entire passage in context is dealing faith - or the lack of it. But if I could offer a conjecture, I think that the Holy Spirit (who is almighty Deity) knows all about those “waveform” mechanisms of the Brain, by virtue of creating them in the first place, and interjected those terms into the passage.
Waves are an interesting Word study in Scripture. Jesus was able to command the “waves” of the sea, and they became calm.
(I pray Lord, at those times in my life when I need it - would you calm the waves of my mind also?)
The psychiatric condition of Bipolar Disorder is a much better dynamic to examine a double minded person.
Also known as Manic Depressive, a person who is bipolar is indeed “unstable in all their ways”.
Bipolar disorder is a condition causing the brain to not function properly.
But if we use 100% of our brains, and we can, in fact, have the correct chemistry whereby our brains function properly, then why are we beset with foibles, and problems in our thinking?
Paul the Apostle said this: “I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.” (Romans 7:18-25 - NIV)
This passage in Romans is the Tug-O-War of being “a double-minded man” described in James. It is the desire to do good, battling with the desire for sin.
But strictly speaking, in terms of actual information processing of the Brain, why is the Brain so imperfect, even when the chemistry is right? Is it possible that there is no way to ever get the Brain chemistry right enough to improve our quality of life?
Why, for example, do I not have a photographic memory? This is called Eidetic memory, and was highlighted in the movie “The DaVinci Code”, with Tom Hanks’ character, Robert Langdon, possessing Eidetic Memory, and this was used creatively by the screen writers as a backdrop to the Da Vinci Code story. (Possible also in the Book of the same title, but like many people, I didn’t read the book, I only saw the movie)
And then I got to thinking: what about these people who are diagnosed as Autistic Savants?
This is a fascinating study in itself. These are the people who are Autistic (or in some cases have a different brain abnormality) and have the extraordinary ability for photographic memory and recall, or computer-like command of mathematics, or can play any song Mozart ever wrote.
Known as Savant Syndrome, these people were first referred to as “Idiot Savants” in 1887 by Dr. John Langdon Down (Down Syndrome). In the late 19th century “idiot” was a scientifically acceptable term to refer to a person whose IQ was less than 20 (Wikipedia).
The most famous case, currently, is that of Kim Peek, who was the inspiration for the movie Rain Man with Dustin Hoffman. Peek is not Autistic, but instead he likely has FG Syndrome (an X chromosome disorder causing developmental abnormalities), and demonstrates Eidetic Memory (photographic memory)., and is also a Speed Reader.
Here is a news clip of Kim Peek -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jL0SthoRMC8Though Peek is currently the most famous Savant, the Television show “That’s Incredible” profiled another Savant in 1981.
His name is Leslie Lemke.
This next clip not only explains this incredible story, but also shows his ability for music. As you’re watching this, keep in mind that Lemke is playing the piano completely blind -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWtZA-ZmOAMI’m happy to say that Leslie Lempke has been around a while. In the link below is a series of clips showcasing his ability. The first clip shows that he impersonates that Jazz great, Louie Armstrong. The second, shows him playing an instrument that I regret to say I’m not familiar with (if you know what the instrument is, please respond to this article with the Blog comments section, or email me if you know how). The third is his biography since birth which explains his blindness, shows him performing, and explains his extraordinary ability, presented in the form of a mini-documentary. The fourth is a performance on October 6, 2007, where he impersonates Louie Armstrong. It is as much a professional performance as you might see a major celebrity deliver. I highly recommend you invest the time to view all the clips in their entirety.
http://www.wisconsinmedicalsociety.org/savant_syndrome/savant_profiles/leslie_lemkeThe case of Leslie Lemke is probably one of the most miraculous of all the Savant Stories - rescued out of the clutches of certain death with his eyes surgically removed. One should not blame those who gave up Leslie as a lost cause, because the circumstances were hopeless at best.
It shows what the faith of an obedient Christian can do. I must admit that I was somewhat rebuked by my conscience when I did the research for this article, as I feel that I don’t nearly do enough for the Lord in my Christian walk.
By why the purpose for this article?
I believe that as we are to “Consider the lilies of the field”, we are to observe all our surroundings for insights into what the Creator wants to say to us.
I believe that Savant Syndrome gives us a glimpse into the Garden of Eden before the fall.
Our Brains were perfect. Adam could easily demonstrate the abilities of photographic memory, (Adam named every living creature - Genesis 1:19-20), and would eventually show effortless computer math while at the same time playing any song he heard only once, if only he had eaten from the Tree of Life instead of the Tree of Knowledge.
How ironic that the Tree of Knowledge ended up making our minds a jumbled mass of sin and “unstable double-mindedness”.
But this will all be made right again.
For eternity The Savior will have Holy Songs of Glory sung to Him, with the genius only hinted at by these Savants.
God truly takes the foolish things of this world to shame the wise.
When sin entered into the world I don’t think it’s possible on this side of reality to understand the damage this caused.
As John Greenleaf Whittier once wrote, ”For of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these, ‘it might have been’” (Whittier was an abolitionist - dedicated to freeing slaves!)
Who but God Himself can calculate the damage that has been done by our slavery to sin?
To me, the biggest miracle of all - in Revelation 21:4 - is the one this world so desperately needs, and the one that will repair the damage caused so long ago in Eden: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."
